Fans of British singer Sam Smith now know how to address them.
The Oscar and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter went to Instagram yesterday to share their truth. The “How Do You Sleep?” singer announced through social media that they want to be referred to with they/them pronouns.
“Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM,” the “Dancing with a Stranger” singer wrote in the caption of his post. “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”
They continued:
“I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non-binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open. If you have questions and are wondering what this all means I’ll try my best to explain but I have also tagged below the human beings who are fighting the good fight everyday. These are activists and leaders of the non-binary/trans community that have helped me and given me so much clarity and understanding.”
This announcement comes years after Sam Smith expressed their desire to explore their gender identity and play with gender norms.
“I love a heel,” he announces sneakily. “I’ve got loads of heels at home. Oh my God, I just buy everything — heels, dresses. We have a great time.”
“People don’t know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn, and all that. There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for 2 ½ years.”
The singer then later officially came out as gender fluid.
So, celebrated singer Sam Smith is celebrating their gender fluidity and giving us notice to celebrate it too. And we couldn’t’ be happier.
