Lena Waithe is having a fantastic week.
Not only was the actress recently announced to be joining HBO’s Westworld, but she’s now working on another show all about LGBTQ life.
BET recently announced that they’ve greenlit a new series written and created by Waithe herself. The show, titled Twenties, is based on her life during her early 20s. Specifically, the show will focus on a queer Black girl named Hattie and her two straight best friends Marie and Nia “who spend most of their days talking ‘ish’ and chasing their dreams.”
“Twenties has been a project I’ve been dreaming about for as long as I can remember. I think a lot of people were interested but didn’t see the vision. I’m so grateful Scott Mills and Connie Orlando did. I couldn’t be more excited to deepen my relationship with BET. I know audiences have been waiting a long time for this one,” said Waithe after the announcement.

The series has been approved for eight half-hour episodes. Waithe will executive produce along with Rishi Rajani and Andrew Coles, and co-showrun with A Different World’s Susan Fales-Hill. The show will then air on BET along with Waithe’s other series Boomerang.
This is the latest in a long list of future projects for Lena Waithe. Along with her future appearance on Westworld, Waithe is executive producing the Showtime pilot How to Make Love to a Black Woman (Who May Be Working through Some S***, the horror anthology Them at Amazon, and an untitled Black Gay Male project with Kid Fury and HBO.
So while we wait to find out if HBO and Issa Rae are still working on that comedy about the dating life of a bisexual black man, Lena Waithe has us covered with Black, LGBTQ representation on the small screen.
