Last week, the world was rocked by the news that the PBS Kids’ show Arthur was still on the air. More specifically, many were overjoyed to hear of the news that Arthur premiered the gay wedding of teacher Mr. Ratburn.
But, not everyone was happy, as some conservatives expressed outrage over the storyline. For instance, Alabama Public Television refused to broadcast the gay wedding episode.
But despite some pushback, the gay wedding episode was met with mostly celebration. And now a meme?
Leave it to the internet, and specifically Twitter users, to find humor and fun in the most random of places. And to make the most random jokes out of it.
After news of the special Arthur episode dropped, one news source included the line “gay rat wedding” in its headline. The Twitter meme “gay rat wedding” was then born. And quickly, it took on a life of its own.

But possibly the best comment was by Buzzfeed News writer and deputy director David Mack who said, “Just realized people are going to dress as gay wedding rats for pride.”

And let’s be honest, people probably will. Last year, a mistake on Netflix, in which thriller film The Babadook was categorized as a gay film, started a similar online meme. Internet users then claimed The Babadook as a gay icon, before trying to match him up with IT’s Pennywise, and many drag queens/pride goers decided to dress as him during last year’s Pride month.

So we are bound to see a few gay rat wedding costumes this June. And honestly, we’re kind of excited about it.
