The MTV helicopters whizzed over the Asbury Park boardwalk all afternoon and the buzz on the boardwalk itself was almost equally as deafening; something big was about to come to Asbury Park this summer Sunday afternoon. What exactly was happening had leaked out earlier last week; The Jonas Brothers were coming to Asbury Park to film their set for the MTV VMA’s, (airing Monday night on MTV)
As Jonas Brothers hysteria hit Ocean Avenue, the boys themselves were surveying the scene high above the city at the brand new Asbury Ocean Club which is the Jersey Shore’s first luxury five star boutique hotel and has views that survey the entire boardwalk area.
The sun finally began to set behind The Stone Pony providing the perfect backdrop for the boys to hit the stage, with a overly packed crowd ready to hear these Jersey boys make their return to Asbury Park, their first one in over a decade. They kicked off their performance inside The Stone Pony with their smash “Sucker”, then hitting the main stage that had been constructed for their performance (via Ocean Avenue) and performing “Only Human”, accompanied by a ten piece band as Jersey Shore-perfect fireworks glistening overhead.
What was probably the most surreal part of the entire event was the complete sense of community that seemed to overtake the ultra diverse community of Asbury Park. From teenage boys holding their girlfriends up on their shoulders (or on stacks of beach chairs) so the girls could get a better view, to the customers at Watermark and Paradise craning their necks from their balconies to get a look at what would become one of the quintessential moments of the Summer of 2019 in Asbury Park.
