LGBTQ students in a California high school say they were harassed by straight students at their school’s first-ever GSA meeting.

When LGBTQ students at Frontier High School heard that a Gay Straight Alliance club was starting up, they were excited. But their excitement was quickly doused with anger after straight peers waving MAGA flags showed up to the meeting.

According to ABC’s local news source Turnto23, the first GSA meeting was held this past Wednesday. But after the meeting’s end, students from the Future Farmers of America confronted the GSA members while holding “MAGA flags.”

One parent of a GSA member took to Facebook to complain about the harassment and said her son was bothered by “straight kids holding hands yelling this is what’s right.” The parent also claims that there has been rising tensions at the school between “FFA and any kids they’ve determined as liberal.”

Part of the altercation was recorded, and can be watched below.

In the above news video about the incident, a student named Matthew shares that he and several other students, from the FFA, were suspended for “harassment, intimidation, and sexual harassment.” Matthew claims that he just went to the GSA meeting out of curiosity and not with the desire to start a fight. He shares the feeling of unable to express his opinions without being “hated on for it.”

The Kern High School District then responded to the viral Facebook post and increasing complaints by releasing the following statement.

“The Kern High School District and Frontier High School recognize that students have varying viewpoints and opinions. One of the goals of the educational process is to teach students how to communicate respectfully. The reported incident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Frontier High School is currently being investigated. Once the investigation is complete, appropriate follow-up measures will be taken.”
