LGBTQ existence in entertainment media is doing wonderful things.
Netflix recently dropped the final season of critically acclaimed animated series BoJack Horseman. The series takes a deep and realistic look at the entertainment industry in Hollywood and the effects it has on mental health. On top of that, the story also takes the time to represent a portion of LGBTQ life that rarely gets attention, asexuality.
In the first few seasons, BoJack’s clueless roommate Todd was depicted as simply a carefree guy who did not have the brain capacity or patience for a relationship. But as the story progressed, it was revealed that Todd is actually asexual. While the character has cared for others romantically before, he has no desire for sexual exploits. This presented asexual representation like never before.
Now that the series has come to a close, Aaron Paul, also known for his performance in Breaking Bad, has shared how touched he was to play the role.
“I was so proud to represent that community,” Paul recently told BuzzFeed News. “So many people came up to me, or have been coming up to me, since that came out, saying, ‘I didn’t know what I was. You have given me a community that I didn’t even know existed,’ which is just so heartbreaking, but also so beautiful, you know?”
After coming out in season four, Todd started to tackle what dating meant for an asexual man. His journey to finding a lover who’d understand that he held no sexual desires was a relatable one for an often unheard populace.
“I think it’s so nice to have a character on TV — especially on a show so powerful like BoJack — that represents a community that should be represented,” Paul added.
But no matter what, it’s now time to say goodbye. While Paul is proud of the work he’s done, he can’t help but feel a little sad at the ending.
“It’s sad to say goodbye, but we know that we’re a part of something incredibly special. And Netflix gave us a beautiful home for six years,” Paul told BuzzFeed. “People love what we’re doing.”
