First the Nanny and now Cynthia Nixon.
While running for New York City mayor didn’t work out for the former Sex & The City actress, it looks like directing will do wonderfully for her. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cynthia Nixon will be directing the latest iteration of lesbian drama Last Summer at Bluefish Cove. This will be her Broadway directorial debut.
Last Summer at Bluefish Cove follows a story set in the 1980s on the titular lesbian beach colony. More specifically, the Jane Chambers play follows a group of female friends who gather each summer. The situation gets flipped upside down, however, when a straight woman who recently left her husband stumbles her way into their world.
On the production side of things, Nixon will not be the only big name attached to the play. Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Wagner will be executive producers of the show. Meanwhile, Harriet Newman Leve will act as the lead producer. In addition, the play will have an all-female cast and creative team.
While Broadway is constantly showing stories with gay leads and gay male storylines like The Boys in the Band, Angels in America, Choir Boy, The Inheritance, and more, lesbian representation is rare. The most recent and recognized example being 2018’s The Prom.
As for Nixon, this may be her first Broadway directorial job, but she has worked on Broadway as a performer many times before. In fact, she made her Broadway debut at 14 in The Philadelphia Story. Since then, she has appeared in over 40 plays. She has also won a 2006 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Rabbit Hole.
We’ll see how she does with this upcoming Broadway production.
