Your heart isn’t ready for this one. The below sweet moment happened at a Pete Buttigieg rally in Denver, Colorado this weekend.
While Buttigieg was campaigning in Colorado this Saturday, the presidential candidate was approached by a nine-year-old boy, according to Bloomberg News. The young Buttigieg supporter, named Zachary Ro, then asked Pete an adorable and meaningful question.
“Would you help me tell the world I’m gay too,” the boy wrote in a pre-submitted question to Buttigieg. “I want to be brave like you.”
Buttigieg, who is openly gay and married to junior high school teacher Chasten Buttigieg, shared that he was already impressed with the Ro’s courage. Buttigieg didn’t come out as gay until he’d reached his 30s in 2015. At the time, he was serving his first term as mayor of South Bend, Indiana. The mayor then got engaged to Chasten in 2017.
“Well, I don’t think you need a lot of advice from me,” Buttigieg told Zachary. “You seem pretty strong to me. It took me a long time to figure out how to tell even my best friend that I was gay.”

The crowd surrounding them agreed as they cheered “love is love.”
“It won’t always be easy, but that’s OK because you know who you are,” Buttigieg told Zachary. “And that’s really important because when you know who you are, you have a center of gravity that can hold you together when all kinds of chaos is happening around you.”
He added: “And the last thing I want you to know is even if I can’t promise it’ll always be easy, I can promise you that I’m going to be rooting for you.”
After the moment, Zachary Ro spoke to The Colorado Sun and shared that he was nervous the entire time.
“It was exciting, and I felt really happy,” he told the newspaper. “I was glad I was able to tell everyone in the audience that I’m gay.”

I didn’t think anything about gay sex until I was 12. I guess it was comparing each other’s bodies in the school shower, and then I liked what I saw. I still dated girls all the way through high school and didn’t touch another guy until after when I was 19, and then I knew what I was missing. Guys know what guys like. I grew up in school in the 70s, when ‘freedom’ was common, but not being gay. Glad times have changed, but not far enough for most. My big brother said to me, you can’t be gay, since I still had girls around a lot, maybe I am BI? but he and his wife are in total acceptance and probably know more gay people than I do! When I was in kindergarten I didn’t think about ‘standard’ gender roles, and got along with everybody. I love Mayor Pete, he’s the classic example of how we all should be!
This was such a cute moment in history , I knew I was gay in kindergarten and that was in the 80s. What a great privilege for the gay boys growing up today and seeing someone who is gay running for president !
