The 2022 Netflix series ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ has been very popular among viewers, but it has also received a lot of criticism from a handful of family members of the notorious serial killer’s victims.
More recently, Evan Peters won his very first Golden Globe for his portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in the thriller TV show, and not everyone is happy about it. Shirley Hughes, the mother of one of the victims, Tony Hughes, expressed her sentiments about the ‘American Horror Story’ star’s award stating:
“Evan should have used his acceptance speech to mention the families who are still suffering from Dahmer’s crimes, or to say Hollywood should put an end to telling stories about killers and glorifying them.”
Peters kept his acceptance speech fairly short, concluding it with:
“I want to thank everyone out there who watched this show. It was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch, but I sincerely hope some good came out of it.”
And to that, Shirley disagreed, saying that “it just adds to the grief for the families of the people Dahmer killed, replaying the tragedy over and over.”
“There’s a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame,” she further expressed.
Furthermore, the victim’s mother also reportedly questioned why Peters decided to portray the role of Dahmer in the first place.
“It’s a shame that people can take our tragedy and make money. The victims never saw a cent. We go through these emotions every day,” Shirley stated.

I mean the news hypes up and sensationalizes murder of all kinds. I believe that needs to be addressed more than this movie in my opinion. There are 100s of murder movies and tv shows aired every year. There’s even a true crime channel so why go after just one movie. I thought two shows about gay murderers were well done, this one & The Assassination of Gianni Versace.
I think you can also say they are educational as I certainly feel there are too many naive young men, that really do not see dangers in meeting complete strangers, whether that be out in a bar or from picking up from the Internet and this type of show just highlights how you might think. Someone seems a nice enough person, but be careful who you decide to hook up with and more importantly don’t do so unless you have let good friends know who you are with where you are going it might not necessarily save you if you become a victim, but it will certainly make certain that you become just one victim not one of many
This is why I stopped watching these real life serial murders series and films. No matter the intentions, the victim’s families are left in shambles and exploited. When the show aired, did the general public talked about the broken justice system and the murdered LGBTQ people of color? No. People made memes to relate to Dahmer’s psychotic behavior, made his glasses a trend, and lust over his “good” looks. Everyone involved with the show should’ve not put in their bids for awards, made more efforts of sympathizing with the victims families, and spoke with them on this tragedy.
