News of John Fennell sprang up earlier this week when gay sites, like ours, realized that there might be a chance of having three openly gay athletes representing America in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Unfortunately, that dream won't be happening as John Fennell didn't make the cut. Even worse, his fate was determined by a freak accident.

Fennell, who competed for Canada in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi before coming out shortly after, was all geared up for the qualifying match to see which luge athletes would make the cut.

Fennell was looking good up to the final stretch of the day when his sled snapped and fell off. While the luger still made 21st, only the top 15 qualified for the World Cup competition. Then, only three out of those 15 would get a spot on the American team at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

After looking like a shoe-in for one of those three spots and then failing because of a technical malfunction, John Fennell was understandably upset.

Unfortunately, this is the end of Fennell's story concerning the 2018 Winter Olympics. But, find a moment to send John Fennell some love on his Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter accounts to let him know we're all thinking of him.
