Derek Chadwick is officially saying goodbye to Goose, the gay social and dating app he helped launch just weeks ago. In a statement shared with followers, Derek Chadwick confirmed that he has stepped away from the company, saying his personal vision for the platform no longer aligned with where the business was heading.

“I’ve stepped away from Goose,” Chadwick announced, explaining that the decision was not an easy one. He said building something for the gay community had been one of his most meaningful projects and expressed gratitude to the tens of thousands of people who joined soon after launch.

The departure comes remarkably early in Goose’s life. The app launched in June 2026 with Chadwick and former BeReal growth and community manager David Aliagas among its founders. Goose positioned itself as something broader than a traditional hookup app, pitching itself as a social-first space where gay men could meet, make friends and potentially find romance.

From promising newcomer to controversy magnet

Goose initially attracted attention for trying to shake up the familiar gay dating-app formula. Instead of relying on conventional swiping, the platform introduced a “wave” system and promoted itself as an alternative to the more hookup-focused culture associated with established apps.

Then came the AI controversy.

A WIRED investigation reported that numerous Instagram accounts promoting Goose appeared to be inauthentic, with some profile images identified by AI-detection tools as likely generated using artificial intelligence. The investigation identified more than two dozen suspicious accounts created around the time of Goose’s launch, some of which allegedly used remarkably similar messages when approaching potential users.

The allegations sparked questions about whether prospective Goose members were being marketed to through AI-generated online personalities. Other reports also examined concerns involving allegedly fake or unauthorized profiles on the platform itself.

Chadwick’s announcement does not state that the controversy is the reason for his departure. Instead, he specifically pointed to a growing disconnect between his own ideas for Goose and the company’s direction.

That distinction matters.

Chadwick wants to stand behind his name

The actor and model explained that when his name and image are attached to a project, he wants to feel comfortable endorsing the whole thing. Once he no longer felt that way, he said remaining involved was no longer the right choice. He also made clear that he is completely finished with the company, saying he is no longer involved with Goose “in any capacity” while wishing the remaining team well.

For someone whose public profile is closely tied to his personal brand, that decision carries some weight. Chadwick has built a career spanning modeling, acting, and entrepreneurship, including his beauty company Chaddy Cosmetics, which launched in 2023 and has expanded its skincare and beauty offerings.

So, what happens to Goose now?

That’s the juicy question.

Goose is still extremely young, and the company says its members have already started hundreds of thousands of conversations. But losing the recognizable face behind its launch so soon after its debut gives the app another unexpected storyline.

Whether Goose can establish itself as a genuine alternative in an already crowded gay dating landscape remains to be seen.

For Chadwick, however, the message seems straightforward: sometimes the smartest business move is knowing when to wave goodbye.
