Dating demands? Todrick Hall is officially back on the market, and he’s wasting no time laying down the law about what he’s looking for in a new boyfriend. Fresh from a breakup with choreographer Liam Roodhoose, Hall has put his requirements front and center on Instagram. And trust, these standards are not just a list — they’re a manifesto for the type of man who’ll be lucky enough to date the multi-talented icon.

The former couple made headlines when they went public with their romance in August 2023, but as we know, not all relationships are built to last. “We ended things months ago,” Hall casually replied to a comment from a follower, signaling that their relationship had run its course. Still, there are no hard feelings — in fact, Roodhoose himself joked about sorting through Hall’s “applications” for the new man in his life.

However, it was Hall’s post showcasing his list of boyfriend requirements that really set the internet ablaze. “Did this as an exercise because I think it’s important for us to manifest what we want,” he captioned the Instagram story. “No beef with my ex, love him to pieces, but ready to start a new chapter!” And manifest he did.

Here’s a peek at what’s on his wishlist:

  • Funny – Needs a sense of humor.
  • Spontaneous.
  • Emotionally intelligent – “Someone who can articulate how they feel and how I can be a better partner for them.”
  • Loyal – “Someone loyal that I can trust to tell me even when they f–k up. Or when I have.”
  • Driven – “Talented or driven at what they do. Must be passionate about something.”
  • Aligned morally and ethically.
  • Pushes me to be better – “Someone who pushes me to try new things and be a better version of myself.”
  • Loves musical theatre.
  • Empathetic – “Must try to understand the Black experience if they’re not Black.”
  • Self-aware – “Nothing is worse than someone who can’t read the room.”

All sounds pretty reasonable, right? But of course, this is Todrick Hall we’re talking about, so the next part of the list is where things get extra spicy.

Page two of his boyfriend wishlist includes such gems as:

  • Big booty – “Just sayin’.”
Beyoncé loyalist – “Must have unwavering respect and understanding that no one is better than Beyoncé … this is non-negotiable.”
  • Family man – “Must want children. I’d literally have four kids LOL.”
  • Monogamy – “I know it’s 2025 but must be OK with the idea of monogamy.”
Stamina – “This is big … relationships are hard. I need someone with stamina who is willing to roll up their sleeves & get their hands dirty when times get rough.”
  • Wizard of Oz fan – “A connection to Wizard of Oz and Disney is a massive plus.”
  • No gold diggers – “Someone who isn’t a coattail rider.”
  • Substance over style – “I don’t do drugs or really drink, doesn’t have to be sober … but it can’t be part of your identity.”

These requirements are more than just a laundry list of traits — they’re a roadmap to a partnership that prioritizes emotional connection, mutual respect, and, of course, a love of musical theatre and Beyoncé.

But Hall’s list didn’t stop there. When shared by GayeMagazine, an editorial platform focused on Black queer life, some followers pointed out an apparent omission: many of Hall’s exes have been White, and the list didn’t mention race. In response, Hall didn’t shy away from setting the record straight: “Contrary to popular belief, they don’t need to be white…in fact, I prefer they weren’t.”

This candid reply was a perfect reminder that while Todrick may have specific expectations, he’s also unbothered by the critiques. After all, his love life is his business, and he’s embracing the opportunity to rewrite the narrative — both for himself and the queer dating world at large.

How Gay and Queer Men Are Redefining Dating

If Hall’s list of demands seems like a page out of a new dating manual, it’s not just him — gay and queer men across the world are redefining what dating looks like in 2025. New research shows that queer men can typically read a potential partner’s intentions within just 43 minutes of meeting them. While some take even less time, this ability to quickly assess the vibe has created a shift in dating culture.

A recent survey by Talker Research of 1,000 single and casually dating gay men revealed that 79% feel it’s time to break away from traditional dating norms and prioritize authenticity, long-term compatibility, and emotional connection over casual hook-ups. Half of those polled have already shifted their goals and are now seeking partners who align with their future aspirations. In fact, 76% of respondents agreed there’s been too much focus on hook-ups, and over half would prefer to build connections based on compatibility rather than just sexual attraction.

Perhaps most interestingly the survey, conducted on behalf of ARCHER, also uncovered that gay and queer men are actively working to break free from traditional role expectations, with over 67% saying they’re working to escape the narrow confines of sexual labels. Men are choosing connections that are based on who they truly are, not on what society or the media has dictated.

So, what does all this mean for Todrick Hall? It means his list is just one example of a broader trend. As queer men continue to redefine what dating looks like, Hall’s honest and playful approach to finding love sets the tone for a generation that’s no longer willing to settle for less than what they deserve — whether it’s a sense of humor, a booty that makes their heart race, or the belief that no one should ever be above Beyoncé.
