Hello, hello, hello…
Ben Affleck is finally answering one of Hollywood’s most intimate questions — and the answer might surprise you.
Twelve years after baring all in the hit thriller Gone Girl, the Oscar-winning actor has confirmed that audiences really did see everything during his now-famous shower scene.
No body double. No Hollywood trickery. And absolutely no prosthetic.
“I wore no prosthesis,” Affleck told Variety Wednesday. “I’ve only worn one in one film, ‘Hollywoodland.’ It was a nose.”
And with that, a mystery that has fascinated fans since 2014 is officially over.
For a man who has spent decades navigating some of Hollywood’s biggest scandals, romances and career comebacks, it is rather remarkable that people are still asking about a few seconds of nudity.
But Affleck, 54, appears to find the whole thing amusing.
In Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher and adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel, Affleck played Nick Dunne, a husband whose world collapses when his wife, Amy, portrayed by Rosamund Pike, suddenly disappears.
The movie became a disturbing examination of marriage, deception and the way public opinion can turn an ordinary person into a national obsession.
Yet among all the shocking plot twists, one brief shower scene created its own headlines.
And apparently, Hollywood has never quite recovered.
Affleck has been joking about the revealing moment ever since the film premiered.
While accepting an award at the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards, he recalled how Fincher had initially assured him that the camera would not expose anything too personal.
“David assured me — because trust is essential with directors and actors — ‘Listen, if we tilt down, we’ll never go far enough to see anything,’ ” Affleck recalled.
Clearly, the director had a slightly different definition of privacy.
Affleck also joked about the temperature on set, thanking Fincher for making sure the conditions were sufficiently chilly.
“If you’re gonna have one chance for America to see your junk, you want it to be cold.”
Even Jennifer Garner, who was married to Affleck when the film was released, couldn’t resist joining the conversation.
During a 2014 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Garner was asked about her husband’s unexpected nude scene.
Her response was priceless.
“What I have to say is, ‘You’re welcome,’ ” she joked.
“I just try to consider myself a charitable person and I wanted to give back. You give me so much, I wanted to give something back to all of you.”
At the time, Affleck and Garner were still one of Hollywood’s most recognizable couples.
Their marriage later ended in divorce, and Affleck subsequently reunited with Jennifer Lopez, married her and went through another very public breakup.
Through it all, his career has continued to generate headlines, from playing Batman to directing acclaimed films and collecting Academy Awards.
But somehow, that brief appearance in the shower remains one of his most discussed performances.
Earlier this month, Affleck revisited Gone Girl during an interview with Letterboxd, explaining that his respect for Fincher was so enormous that he was prepared to do almost anything the filmmaker requested.
“I was willing to do anything for [Fincher], like, be naked.”
His admiration for the director remains undiminished.
“Working with David was the great privilege of my life,” Affleck said. “He’s one of the absolute greatest filmmakers ever to live.”
And perhaps that is the funniest part of this entire story.
Affleck signed up to work with one of Hollywood’s most celebrated directors on a sophisticated psychological thriller about deception, marriage and murder.
He delivered a memorable performance in a critically acclaimed film.
Yet more than a decade later, audiences are still fascinated by what happened when he took off his clothes.
At least Ben is laughing.
And now everyone knows the naked truth.
