Crew Girl is the #1 show on Netflix. And for completely sluttacious reasons – I can see why. Most of the main and supporting cast is comprised of young, athletic, muscular and very attractive men. The icing on the cake is that they wear these spandex singlets that show off their bulges and tight asses. Not that I’ve been looking. There’s even a lot of shirtless action that happens in and out of the water in between rowing sessions.
Rowing is the sport where a team of seven or eight people (I was trying to pay attention, I swear) including the captain race a very skinny, long canoe with special oars. In Crew Girl, a rising rowing athlete named Teagan Tao finds her life turned upside down after some major betrayal by her father. Now having to start over in a small but pertinacious town, Teagan needs to find her way onto the rowing team – one way or another.
This coming of age, teen sports drama is a Canadian production shot by Great Pacific Media and Blue Ant Studios. It was developed for television by Vivian Lin and Morwyn Brebner, with Ms. Lin serving as the series writer, executive producer and showrunner. Miku Martineau stars as Teagan Tao alongside Jessica Pare, Kyle Clark, Samuel Braun, Connor Paton, Olga Petsa, Thomas Cadrot and Jude Wilson.
While Miku Martineau is doing a wonderful job leading Crew Girl, I need to take a moment to highlight Jude Wilson. The actor was already well known before coming aboard this show thanks to character arcs in the Are You Afraid of the Dark reboot, Riverdale and A Million Little Things. But he’s most known to a gay audience for his co-starring role in another Netflix hit titled Fellow Travelers. Get that Netflix money, daddy.
Jude Wilson plays the role of Baloo Garner. He’s the brother of the stereotypical, popular mean girl and an integral part of the rowing team. Baloo is also an out and proud gay character. His sexuality is given a little perspective in episode two when he casually talks about matching with a cute guy on a dating app. The fact that he’s gay is breezed over in a heartwarming way because literally no one cares – which is the way it should be in real life.
Given that I’m just starting episode three of Crew Girl, I hope that Baloo gets more character development outside of being a recurring member of the rowing team. It’s really important to see gay men of all shades, sizes and mannerisms pictured in television, especially when it’s the #1 show on Netflix. It gives representation to the younger generation and teaches them that finding the right people to support you makes all the difference.
And just for the record, despite the fact that Jude Wilson is playing gay characters in Fellow Travelers and Crew Girl, I have no idea what his sexuality is outside of the silver screen. Not that it matters, anyway, because I can confirm he’s a great actor, a promising young star and very easy on the eyes.
