What happens when the hot guy finally wants you — but somehow, you still don’t believe you’re worthy of being loved?
That’s the deliciously messy question at the heart of In Between, the new queer romantic dramedy making its world premiere tonight at Atlanta’s 39th Out On Film Festival.
This isn’t your typical gay rom-com where the handsome guy shows up, the abs glisten, somebody learns a lesson and everyone lives happily ever after. And that’s a good thing.
Nicholas Molencupp stars as Nick, a “husky” gay man who has become pretty solid at laughing off rejection before it can hurt too much. Then along comes Beau (Daredevil: Born Again‘s Cameron Moir), a ridiculously charming British Adonis who seems to be everything Nick has been waiting for.

Because when Beau isn’t ready to be seen publicly with Nick, the real battle isn’t simply about whether this relationship will survive. It forces Nick to confront something much deeper: How much of his own unhappiness comes from the way other people see him — and how much comes from the way he sees himself?
This is a movie about body image, dating, rejection and that uniquely queer feeling of wondering whether you somehow missed the memo about where you’re supposed to fit. It’s also really funny.
With help from his sharp-tongued queer friends, multiple therapists, and a few brutal epiphanies, Nick begins to realize that the love he has been chasing all along does not come with a British accent and a side of abs. It’s a story about finally seeing yourself clearly: in a mirror, in love, and in between.
Who Among Us Hasn’t Felt A Little…In Between?
Molencupp, who wrote and stars in the film, has created a story that can make you laugh at the absurdity of modern gay dating one minute and then quietly punch you in the feelings the next. The result is exactly what the title promises: a movie living somewhere between comedy and heartbreak, fantasy and reality, wanting to be loved and learning to love yourself.
In Between doesn’t ask Nick to become thinner, hotter, cooler or more acceptable before he gets his happy ending. It asks him to stop shrinking himself in the first place. That’s a message a lot of us could stand to hear. Although, it’s worth noting that there’s nothing wrong with being hot – as Mr. Moir deftly demonstrates 🙂

In Between has its world premiere tonight, September 26, at the 39th Out On Film LGBTQ+ Film Festival in Atlanta at Landmark’s Midtown Arts Cinema. If you’re not in Atlanta, you can take advantage of the festival’s “virtual cinema” and stream the film at home from Sept. 27 – Oct. 12.
