Lauren Chan is joining Season 2 as Gen, and her casting raises a bigger question for the fandom: is there room for a lesbian story in the hockey romance everyone’s already obsessed with?

Heated Rivalry knows exactly why people are watching. Hockey. Secret romance. Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander. Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams. And enough sexual tension to make watching two men stand in the same room feel like an Olympic event.
Now Season 2 is adding something the series hasn’t really had before: a potentially significant lesbian character.
Lauren Chan has joined the cast and will play Gen, a Quebecois professional photographer for the Ottawa Centaurs. The character comes from Rachel Reid’s original Game Changers book series, where Gen dates a man. How much of that storyline will survive the jump from page to screen remains to be seen.

And that leaves Heated Rivalry fans with an interesting question: will the show’s gay male and straight female audience actually want a lesbian storyline?
The answer probably depends on what viewers think Heated Rivalry is supposed to be.
Heated Rivalry Fans Came for Shane and Ilya
For many viewers, the appeal is very specifically Shane and Ilya. Season 1 established their relationship as the emotional center of the series, following two hockey rivals who fall in love while trying to keep their relationship hidden. Season 2 is expected to continue that story, with the pair still weighing the risks of going public and what that could mean for their careers and lives.
So introducing another romance into that world comes with an obvious balancing act.
Fans who watch primarily for Shane and Ilya may not necessarily want the show to devote a huge amount of time to another couple, regardless of whether that couple is male/male, female/female, or another configuration entirely. But that’s also what makes a lesbian storyline potentially interesting.
A show can have a central romance without every other character existing solely to orbit around it. Gen could give Heated Rivalry another perspective on queer relationships, particularly within the same professional hockey world, without taking Shane and Ilya out of the spotlight.
And for lesbian viewers who have been watching a show packed with male/male romance, that distinction matters.
Will Gay Men and Straight Women Be Into It?
This is where things get interesting. Heated Rivalry has attracted an audience beyond gay men, including straight women who have become invested in Shane and Ilya’s relationship. So would those viewers welcome a lesbian storyline, or would they rather keep the spotlight firmly on the show’s central couple?
For gay male fans, Gen could offer another queer perspective within the same hockey world without changing what brought them to the series in the first place. For straight women who are invested in the show’s M/M romance, the question may be even simpler: is Gen’s story good enough to make them care?
The biggest issue is balance. A lesbian storyline doesn’t have to compete with Shane and Ilya, but it also shouldn’t feel like a detour that exists simply to give the show another queer character. If Gen gets a story that stands on its own, she could add something new to Heated Rivalry while Shane and Ilya remain at the center.
And Chan herself seems pretty invested in being part of it.
Lauren Chan Already Has a Personal Connection to the Show
Chan isn’t treating her arrival as just another acting credit. She has been open about how much the series affected her personally.
“It’s undeniable: Heated Rivalry created a cosmic shift in Canada, the global entertainment industry, and for our LGBTQ+ community,” Chan tells PEOPLE exclusively. “On a personal level, it affected me so deeply that I actually told [creator and director] Jacob [Tierney] I’d play a dog if he asked. I’m just a very small part of this incredible project, but I’ll never stop being grateful to Rachel Reid, Jacob Tierney, Brendan Brady, and the teams at Lewis Kay, Accent Aigu, and Crave. And just like audiences everywhere, I can’t wait to see season 2 come together.”
That’s a pretty enthusiastic way to accept a role. Chan also tied the knot with her wife, director Hayley Kosan, in 2025, during a year that brought plenty of other major moments in her career.
In 2025, Chan became the first out lesbian to appear solo on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. She was also the first queer plus-size model for the brand when she was named a Rookie in 2023.
“I’m the first out lesbian on the cover — with her own cover — and how much that means to me makes that surprise feel so overwhelming,” Chan said. “That’s where I feel like the tears of joy and celebration and relief and community come from.”
Her television résumé has also grown considerably. Chan has appeared on Canada’s Drag Race, Project Runway, and The Traitors Canada, where she reached the finale, and made a cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2. She has also worked as a red carpet correspondent for eTalk and as a fashion journalist, while advocating for body positivity and inclusivity in the fashion and entertainment industries.
Now she’s adding one of television’s most talked-about queer romance series to the list.
Whether viewers end up wanting more of Gen may ultimately come down to the character herself. If the show gives her a story worth following, the lesbians may not be the only ones watching.
Season 2 Still Belongs to Shane and Ilya
Chan’s arrival doesn’t change the fact that Season 2 is expected to remain heavily focused on Shane and Ilya.
The series is currently filming in Canada, where the show originated, and Chan joins returning cast members including François Arnaud as Scott Hunter and Robbie G.K. as his partner Kip.
New cast members also include Brendan Morgan, David Tomlinson, Gerry Dee, Michelle Mylett, and Nick Stahl. Season 2 is expected to premiere in spring 2027 and draw from Reid’s sixth Game Changers novel, The Long Game.
Set nearly 10 years later, The Long Game finds Shane and Ilya still guarding their relationship as they weigh the risks of going public — and what that choice would mean for their futures on and off the ice.
Storrie essentially gave fans permission to spoil the source material when he confirmed the second installment alongside Williams in December 2025.
“Start reading The Long Game if you want to spoil it for yourself,” Storrie said on Instagram.
So yes, Shane and Ilya are still the main attraction. But Gen could give Heated Rivalry something it hasn’t had before: another queer relationship perspective that doesn’t have to replace the central romance to matter.
Whether viewers ultimately embrace that will depend on what the writers do with her.
For gay male fans, straight female fans, and anyone else who has become invested in this hockey-filled emotional disaster, the real test is simple: give us a good story, and we’ll probably watch.
And if that good story happens to involve a lesbian photographer from Quebec? Even better.
