Apparently, the culture war has finally arrived at the gates of the Magic Kingdom — and Mickey Mouse is somehow caught in the crossfire.

Disney is not making Mickey Mouse transgender. But a fake social media post claiming the world’s most famous mouse was getting a gender transition was enough to send some people into a very serious tizzy, complete with boycott threats and all the outrage you’d expect.
The source? Mouse Trap News, an Instagram account whose bio contains the tiny but rather important disclaimer: “Real Disney news that is 100% fake.” And yet, here we are.

Mickey Mouse becomes Moxie Mouse — according to absolutely nobody at Disney
In a video posted on 19 August and captioned “this might be the most controversial move ever by Disney”, Mouse Trap News claimed Disney had issued an “official statement” announcing that Mickey was “undergoing gender transition surgery to become Moxie Mouse”.
The alleged reason? “Inclusivity, diversity and understanding.”
The fake announcement went on to say: “It will help reduce the stigma around transgenderism, especially with kids.”
According to the post, Moxie would look similar to Minnie Mouse, only wearing a red dress. Which raises several important questions, including why anyone believed this and whether Mickey has somehow been paying attention to the discourse while we’ve all been busy arguing about everything else.
The answer to the first question is, unfortunately, social media.
The Mouse Trap News disclaimer was right there
The whole thing becomes considerably less mysterious when you look at the account behind it. Mouse Trap News doesn’t merely post questionable Disney stories. It proudly tells everyone that its stories are fake.
Its other offerings have included claims that Disney parks would charge visitors one cent for every breath they take, that the company would offer colonoscopies to park guests and that Moana would be transgender in Moana 2. At this point, the account isn’t exactly hiding the joke behind a bush.
Yet the Mickey story still managed to spark genuine outrage, with some people apparently ready to boycott Disney over a fictional character transformation that Disney never announced. And that’s the slightly less funny part.
Because the joke isn’t really about Mickey. It’s about how quickly a social media post can turn into an emotional reaction before anyone bothers to ask the extremely boring but increasingly essential question: Is this actually true?
Disney already has queer characters, by the way
Here’s the thing that makes the whole Moxie Mouse panic even more delicious: Disney doesn’t need to invent a transgender Mickey to have LGBTQ+ characters. The company already has queer characters in its universe.
Ethan Clade is gay — and the world didn’t end
Ethan Clade from Strange World is openly gay, making him one of Disney’s most prominent gay teenage protagonists. And perhaps the most refreshing thing about Ethan is that being gay isn’t treated as some enormous dramatic revelation requiring an entire cinematic universe to process it.
He’s a teenager. He has a crush. He has a family. He goes on an enormous, dangerous adventure. Basically, he gets to be gay and have a plot.
Luz Noceda is bisexual and very busy
Then there’s Luz Noceda from The Owl House, a bisexual protagonist who falls in love with Amity Blight. Luz isn’t a background character who appears for approximately seven seconds so Disney can point at the screen and say, “Look! Representation!”
She’s the main character. She’s chaotic, brave, occasionally disastrous and bisexual. As queer representation goes, that’s considerably more substantial than putting Mickey in a red dress and calling him Moxie.
Officer Specter has a girlfriend and means business
Before Disney’s fictional Moxie Mouse could apparently send anyone into cardiac arrest, Pixar had already given us Officer Specter, the cyclops cop from Onward. Voiced by Lena Waithe, Specter casually drops the line, “My girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out,” making it clear she’s a lesbian without turning her sexuality into an entire Very Special Episode.
The scene lasts only a moment, but it was a genuine milestone: Specter was Pixar’s first openly LGBTQ+ character with a speaking role. The fact that some countries censored the line or banned the film altogether only made the supposedly tiny moment considerably louder.
So, is Mickey transgender?
No. Mickey is still Mickey. Minnie is still Minnie. The parks are still full of people wearing enormous mouse ears and making questionable financial decisions over souvenir popcorn buckets.
There is no Moxie Mouse. There is no Disney announcement. There is no secret red-dress rebrand.
There is, however, a very real reminder that fake news works particularly well when it tells people exactly what they already want to believe — or exactly what they already want to be angry about.
And if an Instagram account openly says its news is “100% fake,” perhaps that’s a good moment to put down the pitchfork, step away from the comment section and conduct the radical act of checking the source.
Because if your political outrage can be triggered by a fictional mouse getting a fictional gender transition from a fictional news story posted by an account that literally admits it makes things up, maybe Mickey isn’t the one who needs a reality check.
