Priesthood was supposed to be the future for Brazilians Melqui Ferraz and Denisson Santos. Instead, their time in the seminary led them somewhere neither man expected: into each other’s arms.
Melqui and Denisson were seminarians, meaning they were studying and preparing for the Catholic priesthood. They were not priests, but their lives were centered around religious training and the expectations that came with it.
Somewhere along the way, however, their relationship became something more.
The two men recently shared their story on social media, and was reshared by Portal Radio Jornal FM, and their journey has touched thousands of people who saw something familiar in their decision to choose love and live more honestly.
A Love They Tried to Keep Quiet
According to Melqui, the feelings between them were always there, but they had to be kept quiet because of their religious vocation. Their superiors eventually tried to separate them, including transferring them to different cities.
Despite the distance, the memories of their time together stayed with Melqui.
“I carried with me the memories I made with you in that city, like the celebrations we attended, pretending to be brothers when, behind closed doors, it was love,” Melqui wrote. It is a simple but powerful description of what it was like to care deeply for someone while having to hide what that relationship really meant.
Choosing Love
Melqui also described attempts by their superiors to keep the two men connected, but only discreetly and away from public attention.
For Melqui, living that way was not enough.
“If loving you and living with you caused these so-called doors to close, then let another thousand close!” he wrote.
Eventually, Melqui chose to leave the seminary so he could live his life and his relationship with Denisson more openly. It was not necessarily an easy choice. Leaving behind a path they had spent years preparing for meant stepping into an uncertain future.

But sometimes, the hardest decision can also be the most freeing one.
Melqui shared photos of the two in their seminary uniforms on his Instagram with the caption,
“When we broke those chains, we were told, ‘You are closing so many doors. If it doesn’t work out, you will never be able to come back.’ But the strength and desire to be free kept us from listening to those voices, and today we are here. Nothing they said would happen actually happened.
The strength of someone who truly wants to make something happen is greater than any obstacle.”
A Different Kind of Calling
Their story has resonated online, with many people praising the former seminarians for choosing authenticity despite the pressure they experienced.
There is something beautifully relatable about their journey. Most of us have imagined what our lives would look like, only to discover that life has something completely different in store.
Melqui and Denisson entered the seminary believing they were preparing for lives devoted to the priesthood. Instead, they found a relationship that made them question whether the future they had planned was really the future they wanted.
They may not have become priests, but they did find something meaningful along the way. They found each other. And sometimes, finding the person you love is enough to make you brave enough to change the rest of your life.
