David Corenswet is getting bigger, scruffier, and, quite frankly, extremely easy on the eyes in Mr. Irrelevant. The Superman star has already proven he can disappear into a role, but his transformation into NFL player John Tuggle may be his most physically distinctive yet.
And yes, we noticed.

From Superman to Football Beef
In the latest trailer, Corenswet looks noticeably different from the polished Clark Kent/Superman we have come to know. His body is fuller and more muscular, but not in the sharply defined superhero way. Instead, he looks like an actual football player, with the kind of substantial build that makes Tuggle feel believable rather than simply making David look like an actor who spent a few months in the gym.
Then there is the mustache.
The facial hair does some serious character work, but it is really the actor’s energy that sells the transformation. Where Superman can feel almost impossibly perfect and untouchable, Tuggle comes across as warmer, more grounded, and instantly approachable.
Basically, Superman is serving godlike. Tuggle is serving guy-you’d-actually-want-to-have-a-beer-with.

The Last Pick Who Became Anything But Irrelevant
Mr. Irrelevant tells the story of Tuggle, who was selected by the New York Giants as the final pick of the 1983 NFL Draft.
The title sounds almost cruel when you know what came next.
Tuggle may have been the last player selected, but he went on to become a beloved member of the Giants and the NFL community, earning the respect of teammates and fans through his determination, kindness, and toughness. His career was tragically cut short after he was diagnosed with cancer, but his impact on the people around him outlasted his time on the field.
That gives David’s transformation another layer. He is not simply playing a football player. He is portraying a man whose story is ultimately about being remembered for who he was, rather than where he was picked.
And that is where the actor appears to really shine.
Bigger Muscles, Bigger Heart
The film also stars Isabel May as Katie, Michael Shannon as Giants head coach Bill Parcells, and David Krumholtz as Julius “Whitey” Horai.
For all the fun of watching the actor bulk up and trade the Superman suit for football gear, Mr. Irrelevant looks like it wants to give audiences something more meaningful than eye candy. The physical transformation gets us through the door. Tuggle’s story is what may keep us there.
